Shade Plants from Mary McCroan’s Lunch and Learn Presentation

Understory Trees

    • Dogwood
    • Redbud
    • Redtip Photenia
    • Hawthorne
    • Native blueberries
    • Japanese maples
    • Hollies (large-Mary Nell)
    • Bottlebrush Buckeye
    • Crepe Myrtle (doesn’t flower much in shade, but a nice form)

      Shrubs

      • Hollies (Medium-Acadiana)
      • Pieres
      • Camellias
      • Azaleas (Encores have done great)
      • Native azalea
      • Rhododendron (haven’t done well over time)
      • Cleyera
      • Hydrangea (Annebelle, Mopheads, Oakleaf)
      • Gold Dust Acuba
      • Wheelers Dwarf Pittosporum (didn’t do well over time)
      • Variegated Pittosporum (“see through” shrub in shade, but I like the color)
      • Soft Touch Mahonia (mixed, did well some spots, died others)
      • Florida Anise
      • Gardenia (doesn’t flower well in shade, but useful for screening)
      • Junipers (have done better than expected with just a couple hours sun)
      • Nadina cultivars (very slow growing in shade, not been that happy with them)
      • Indian Hawthorne (better than expected with just a couple hours sun)
      • Purple Loropetalums (not a dense plant in shade, but I like the color)
      • Abelias (less dense in shade, but flowers.  I like the short, variegated ones)
      • Southern Wax Myrthle (died)
      • Awabuki Viburnum (died)
      • Winter Daphne (wonderful, short-lived, smells great in winter)

        Perennials

        • Evergreen Ferns (Tassel, Korean Rock, Autumn, Holly, Indian Holly)
        • Deciduous Ferns (Cinnamon, Ostrich, Leatherleaf, Rosy Maidenhair, Northern Maidenhair)
        • Hosta’s (mixed experience, do better in containers)
        • Elephant Ear Illustris
        • Rose Campion
        • Strawberry Begonia
        • Liriope and
        • Evergreen Solomon’s Seal
        • Lenten Rose
        • Purple Shamrock
        • Woodland Phlox (didn’t do great for me)
        • Garden Phlox (flowered all summer on 2 hours afternoon sun)
        • Japanese Anemone (good foliage, but few flowers in shade)
        • Turks Cap (Malvaviscus arboreus)
        • Curcumin

          Annuals

          • Impatience
          • Coleus
          • Caladium
